Project Description:

Back before flat panel screens solved the problem of big and bulky computer monitors, our Designers and Gateway wrestled with the bulky and awkward proportions of the CRT. Gateway created the core electromechanicals to define product specifications and usability features. These details formed the basis for concept development.

The ideation process focused on a distinctive look and feel to help product branding. The new product design began with sketches and was completed in CAD. Significant user and style research drove the selection of the family look for the line.

This product design incorporates large intersecting curves and a unique blended grid ventilation pattern. This vent pattern helps the product run at a cooler temperature and exceeds standard requirements.

Our industrial designers raised the height of the device for a more ergonomic sight line to the screen. Located below the screen is a wheel control selector/button. This control, innovative for it’s time, allows users to scroll through menu options by turning the dial and making selections by pushing in on the dial like a button. This allowed adjustment of a variety of image settings (i.e. color, contrast, brightness, etc.).

This new product is an aesthetic counterpart for other Gateway products. The design team kept the tower case and keyboard in mind when developing this monitor. The top edge of the monitor and bezel around the screen resemble the edge and bezel on the tower case. The crescent shape in the base fits the obverse crescent shape on the keyboard. This family look helps unify Gateway products to create a harmonious line of computer equipment.
